
Why it’s time to ditch those old bathroom heat lamps
Let’s be honest: those old-school halogen heat lamps in the bathroom are kind of a joke. They get bright enough to wake up the whole neighborhood, but they don’t actually keep you warm once you step out of the shower. Plus, they’re basically magnets for moisture, which is a recipe for trouble in a steamy bathroom. That’s why we’ve been moving toward waterproof infrared systems. A shower is a brutal place for electronics, and these units are actually built to survive it. The magic of infrared Here is the thing about traditional heaters: they try to warm up the air around you. But air is thin, and the heat just floats away. Infrared is different. It doesn’t bother with the air; it goes straight for your skin. It’s an instant, deep warmth. We use specific emitters so you get a concentrated hit of heat without needing a giant, ugly fixture taking up your entire ceiling. It just works. Dealing with the damp The biggest killer of bathroom heaters? Steam. Water vapor sneaks into the housing, eats away at the terminals, and eventually, the whole thing shorts out. It’s frustrating. To stop that, we’ve moved past “splash-proof” and gone for IPX4 ratings or higher. We use heavy-duty gaskets and sealed junctions that can handle the constant swing from freezing cold to steaming hot without cracking. If you skimp on the waterproofing, you’re basically buying a heater that will burn out by next winter. Not worth it. A few things to watch out for If you’re swapping an old lamp for one of these, it’s usually a pretty easy fit in the ceiling. But don’t just plug and play. Check your wiring first. These infrared arrays pull a lot of power when they first kick on. You want to make sure your breakers can handle the load so you aren’t tripping the power every time you want a warm bathroom. Also, these things gethot. Really hot. Even though they’re efficient, the outer shell can still sear you if you’re not careful. Make sure you leave at least a 10cm gap between the unit and your ceiling materials. You want plenty of airflow so you aren’t accidentally turning your ceiling into a fire hazard.
