
Keeping You Safe When Putting Infrared Heaters in the Bathroom
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. Between the thick steam from a hot shower and the occasional direct spray of water, it’s basically a swamp in there. If you use a standard heater, you’re asking for trouble. You need something that locks out moisture completely so you don’t end up with a nasty ground fault while you’re scrubbing your toes.
What “IP65” Actually Means for You
You’ll see “IP65” on the spec sheet, but forget the jargon for a second. All it really means is that the unit is tight. The “6” keeps the dust out, and the “5” means you can spray it with water from any angle and it won’t flinch. We make this happen with high-temp silicone gaskets and sealed cable glands. It’s all about the seal. But here’s the tricky part: moisture. It loves to create tiny, invisible paths for electricity to travel across insulators. We call this “tracking.” To stop that from happening, we use ceramic insulators and special potting compounds at the connections. It keeps the electricity where it belongs—inside the wires—and away from you.
The Heat Struggle
Things grow when they get hot. It’s basic physics. An infrared lamp can jump from 20°C to 600°C in a heartbeat. If the housing is too rigid, that expansion will literally crack your waterproof seals. Once that happens, steam leaks right onto the live terminals. To fix this, we use floating mounts. This gives the heating tube a bit of breathing room to expand and contract without ripping the gaskets apart.
Grounding and the Heat Trade-off
We always insist on a dedicated earth bond for the chassis. Why? Because if a seal ever does fail and water hits the element, we want your RCD to trip instantly. It’s the ultimate safety net. But there’s a catch. When you seal a unit this tightly to keep water out, you’re also trapping heat inside. It’s like wearing a winter coat in July. To keep the internal wiring from melting, we don’t use cheap plastic. We use high-temperature fluoropolymer (FEP) or silicone-insulated leads. They can handle the sweat and the heat without breaking a sweat.
