
How to Actually Get High-Density Heat into a Mobile Glass Repair Rig
If you’ve ever tried to build a mobile glass repair bracket, you know the struggle. You’re fighting a constant war between how much power you have and how much heat you actually need. You can’t just slap a bunch of bulky coils in there—there’s simply no room. The secret is using shortwave IR lamps. They push energy into a tight band, which lets you hit that sweet spot where the glass softens without accidentally melting the rest of your chassis. The battle with a small footprint When you shrink your gear, you start dealing with annoying voltage drops and heat that goes everywhere except where you want it. To fix this, we use quartz lamps with a high wattage-per-centimeter. By keeping the lamps short but cranking the wattage, you hit your target temp way faster. It’s a win-win: your mobile power supply doesn’t get drained, and your bracket doesn’t turn into a giant heat sink that wastes half your energy. Choosing parts that won’t quit We usually go with halogen-filled quartz tubes. Why? Because they can handle being turned on and off rapidly without cracking. Standard glass just can’t take that kind of thermal shock. Then there’s the connectors. This is where a lot of people mess up. Stick with standard R7s or SK15 sockets. It makes life so much easier when a lamp eventually burns out and you just need to pop in a new one without rebuilding the whole rig. But heads up: more heat density means the lamp itself gets scorching. If you don’t leave room for the heat to escape or add some shielding, you’re going to warp your frame or fry your electronics. Not a great look. Putting it into practice One pro tip: use high-temp silicone leads for your wiring. Regular insulation will just melt, and nobody wants a short circuit in the middle of a job. When you’re setting up the IR element, get it as close to the glass as you possibly can. Every millimeter of gap is just wasted energy leaking into the air. When you get this right, it’s a great feeling. You’ve basically taken a heavy, industrial benchtop cutter and shrunk it down into a portable tool that actually works.
