If you’ve spent any time running batch annealing for glass tubes, you know the frustration of “drift.” You’ll have one batch that comes out absolutely perfect. Then, the very next one has internal stress or weird deformations. It’s maddening. Most engineers immediately start messing with the furnace controller, thinking the software is the problem. But usually? It’s just the IR lamps. The problem with “close enough” Here’s the thing: if your lamps have even a tiny variance in wattage—say 5%—you’ve effectively built cold spots into your heating zone. In the world of glass, a few degrees is the difference between a perfect tube and one that cracks the second it hits the cooling phase. That’s why we obsess over tight tolerances. We make sure every single lamp in your array puts out the exact same amount of heat. When the heat load is uniform, your ramp-up and soak times actually stay predictable. No more guessing. The hidden trap in high-density heating To get glass to that softening point, you need serious heat. That means high-wattage shortwave quartz lamps. They pack a punch, but they’re hungry for power. If you’re spec-ing out a system with 2kW+ lamps, you have to be careful with your wiring. If your power supply or cabling can’t handle the current, you get voltage drops. And guess what? Those drops usually happen at the end of the line. The last few lamps in the row end up underperforming, and suddenly your batch uniformity is shot. It’s a simple electrical fluke that ruins a lot of expensive glass. Don’t just swap the dead bulb IR lamps aren’t forever. They fade. The tricky part is that they don’t all quit at the same time. As a few lamps start to dim, your thermal profile shifts without you even noticing. My advice? Stop swapping single bulbs. Track your lamp hours and replace them in full sets. It feels like a waste to toss a bulb that’s “still working,” but replacing the entire bank is the only way to keep your heat map flat. It’s the easiest way to lock in your specs and finally stop that quality roller coaster.
