
Why Short Wave Infrared is the Go-To for Glass Annealing
Glass lines move fast. Like, really fast. And if you don’t get the temperature drop exactly right, you’re looking at internal stress or, worse, a pile of shattered glass. That’s where short wave quartz infrared lamps come in. They give you that instant heat response you need to keep the line moving without everything cracking under pressure.
Why it actually works
Here is the thing about short wave lamps: they run way hotter than the medium or long wave stuff. Because of that, the heat doesn’t just sit on the surface—it punches deep into the glass, and it does it fast. We use high-purity quartz tubing because standard glass would just warp under that kind of heat. The best part? You flip the switch and you’re at full power in milliseconds. No waiting around for an oven to warm up. It means you can crank up your line speed and still sleep soundly knowing your glass isn’t going to turn brittle.
Getting the gear right
When we set these up for inline annealing, we usually go with high-wattage tubes. You need that heat density if you’re dealing with wide conveyor belts. But a word of caution: these things pull a lot of current. If you’re running 2kW+ tubes,**don’t cheap out on the wiring.**Make sure your connectors are rated for the heat, or you’ll be replacing burnt-out plugs more often than you’d like. Then there’s the quartz envelope. It’s the secret sauce that lets the radiation pass through without getting soaked up by the lamp itself. Some folks use coated tubes to bounce the heat forward onto the glass. It works great, though it does make the lamp run a bit hotter internally.
The reality of the shop floor
Moving to these lamps instead of batch annealing is a huge relief. You save a ton of floor space and stop wasting energy. But there’s a catch. Short wave radiation is intense, which makes these lamps a bit moody about dirt. If your shop is dusty or grimy, that gunk builds up on the quartz. That leads to hot spots, and eventually, a cracked tube. Keep them clean. It’s a simple chore, but it’s the difference between a lamp that lasts and one that dies way too early.
