
Why Your Infrared Heaters Keep Dying (And How to Fix It)
If you’ve ever had a budget infrared heater just quit on you, there’s a good chance the problem started at the lead-wire junction. When we talk about “factory-grade” sealing, it’s not about making the thing look pretty. It’s about survival. You’re dealing with a brutal battle between extreme heat and the wires that keep the power flowing.
The breaking point
Here is the thing: infrared lamps put out an incredible amount of concentrated heat. In the cheap units, the spot where the wire meets the quartz tube is usually the first place to go. If the sealant isn’t built for that kind of heat, it starts to shrink. Then it cracks. Once that seal is gone, the wire insulation basically starts to bake. It gets brittle, flakes away like old paint, and then—pop—you’ve got a short circuit. At best, you’re replacing a fuse. At worst, you’re looking at a fire.
Doing it the right way
We don’t just slap some glue on there. We use high-temp ceramic or silicone potting compounds to completely encase where the wire exits. The trick is getting the materials to move together. If the sealant and the quartz tube expand at different rates when they get hot, the seal just pops right off. We make sure they’re in sync. Getting this right does two big things: First, it locks the wire in place. No more shaking or vibrating that rubs the insulation raw. Plus, it keeps oxygen and moisture away from the connection, which stops the metal from rusting or oxidizing.
A quick heads-up on installation
There is a trade-off, though. Because this sealing is so solid, the wire exit is pretty rigid. Don’t try to bend those wires sharply right at the seal. If you force it, you might crack the potting. Just leave yourself a little bit of a “service loop” when you’re wiring it up. And if your setup is really tight and requires those sharp angles? Just let us know.
